Dear People,

Youth A.I.D. Lewisham, a small voluntary Youth Organisation, initiated the above Community Heritage Event in November 1996. Planned as a one off, it quickly became an important annual event enjoyed by many from Lewisham, across London (and outside). It has been a great success in terms of the learning and sharing a tremendous amount about what is so special about our "Caribean Black Cake" and the many skills associated, some of which is captured in our book, The Carribean Black Cake.

For too many reasons to go into, we have not been able to sustain the initial work needed to continue the event, as in past years......that is not to say that we have been inactive, far from it. A small group of us continue to seek new and innovative ways of "Keeping the Cake on the Table" and are hopeful that in the not too distant future we will have news on our work to share.

In the meantime, we have a healthy collection of archival materials - photos, books etc that, subject to conditions, we are able to offer for short term loans. Remember Support the Making of the Cake, and the Cake Makers.....and Eaters.

We Give Thanks

Details
:
The Caribbean Cake Event is in its seventh year. The idea for this project came from the young people at Lewisham Youth A.I.D. It began as a creative way to raise funds for work being done to support young black men. It was found to have a wider appeal and to be much more complicated and culturally significant than had been expected. The ingredients involved in cake making raised issues around Geography and History (e.g. Lewisham's links with Tate & Lyle, and the slave trade). It brought a greater awareness of the historical black presence in Lewisham, and the potential was seen for both forging and improving intergenerational links.

This intergenerational project is a 'community glue' event. It introduces young people to the various cultural concepts that have maintained the production of the black cake. It has involved elders from the community sharing their skills, stories, experiences and reminiscences about the black cake; Students making cakes and being shown how to ice and decorate them.

We hope to awaken a greater appreciation of the black cake and its role in cultural celebrations such as weddings, christenings, funerals etc. Young people will learn how to make these cakes and be given an understanding of the traditions involved in the methods used to make the cakes and how the cakes are used. e.g. The bidding of money for the cake at christenings to raise funds for the child. By opening a dialogue between generations, older people will be encouraged to pass on their traditional cake making skills. The cake exhibition will give the wider community access to this aspect of African Caribbean culture and artistic expression. It will create a greater awareness in the community of the importance of these traditions. The cake exhibition will engender greater interest and be a catalyst to encourage young and old to preserve and improve their skills.

This intergenerational event focuses on is the 'black cake' and its importance in celebrations and festive occasions. The ingredients and method of making this cake is a well-guarded secret in many families and the traditions of presentation and ceremony are echoed in African communities throughout the Caribbean, USA and Europe etc. The decoration of these cakes involves highly developed skills.

The thinking behind the traditions of saving a tier of wedding cake for the christening of the first child, and other traditions are being lost by many. The bonding between families can be engendered through this event and needs to be revived. The specific skills in making these cakes (which are different from European methods) need to be passed on in a more formal manner in our society. The need for a 'recognition' of these traditions is important.
